The Old Tretyakov Gallery is located in the merchant district of Moscow, Zamoskvorechye— the area beyond the Moskva River and opposite the Kremlin. It resembles a fairy tale house that once belonged to Paul Tretyakov, a collector and a patron of artists. The collection includes the diverse works of art ranging from ancient icons from Byzantium, Kiev Russ, Moscow, Novgorod, and Pskov to the fine arts – a rather modern one compared to the European school of painting but very prolific and poetic. Visiting the Gallery allows discovering Russia through the numerous portraits of historic characters, civil and battle scenes, cozy or vast landscapes, fairy tale plots, and monumental portraits of Emperors and national heroes.
