Leo Tolstoy’s Estate in Khamovniki is one of the most amazing places of old Moscow. It remains exactly the same as it was during Leo Tolstoy’s life. The renowned Russian writer lived with his family and worked in the house from 1882 to 1901. Many of his famous works were written here, including The Death of Ivan Ilyich; The Kreutzer Sonata; the novel, Resurrection; the drama, The Power of Darkness and Harvest of Education.
Tolstoy’s Moscow estate consisted of several buildings: the main house, a wing, a carriage building, a guardhouse and a kitchen. The tour will take you around the main house. Get the chance to see what the family’s everyday life was like, hear how Tolstoy’s views changed, what his searches were about.
