Day 1: Rail from St. Petersburg to Petrozavodsk

In the evening you arrive in Petrozavodsk with comfortable Lastochka train (5 hrs) from St. Petersburg. You will be met, greeted, and escorted to your hotel Fregat. Accommodation.

Day 2: Kizhi Island

After breakfast explore the capital of Karelia – Petrozavodsk – and admire the Onega Lake. Then travel to Kizhi Island by hydrofoil (1h 30 min). Visit the open-air museum of Wooden Architecture and view the remains of an ancient Russian settlement of the 16th century – churches, houses, mills, forges and stables built without the use of a single nail. Visit the churches and farmer’s house. Get a real taste of life in the past.  Enjoy your lunch and travel back to Petrozavodsk.

Day 3: Karjala Park - Trekking with husky – Dacha Wintera

In the morning travel to the eco-complex Karjala Park and visit the husky farm. Learn more about the Siberian dogs. Trek with them in the Karelian pine forest. Become good partners as you need to find the common speed and feel each other with your husky.

Take part in Kalitki (Karelian pies) culinary class and enjoy traditional fish dishes. Then arrive in Sortavala town. Accommodation at Dacha Wintera Hotel – best in Karelia.

Day 4: Valaam Island

Wake up early and make an unforgettable trip to Valaam Island. Get to Valaam Island by hydrofoil. At different centuries the Island was a part of Novgorod Republic, Sweden, Finland and USSR. It is famous for the beautiful Nordic nature. The name Valamo means the high mountain ground.  Walk around the 14th century monastery. Visit one of the skits and try simple monastic food during the lunch in the monastery’s refectory. Return to your hotel in Sortavala.

Ruskeaka Mountain Park – Retro Train – back to St. Petersburg

This morning have the tour of Sortavala town and visit the art gallery of Kronid Gogolev, an artist with a unique woodcarving technique.   

After lunch, visit Ruskeala Park and view the marble canyon flooded with water that makes it a beautiful clear lake. Ruskeala marble was mined here in 18-19th centuries for decorations of St. Petersburg palaces and cathedrals.

Then ride Ruskeala Retro steam-train back to Sortavala. Board Lastochka train to return to St. Petersburg late evening. Upon arrival you will be met and escorted to your hotel in St. Petersburg.
